Builders and construction waste
Builders waste skip bins in Cairns
Four sizes, 2m³ to 6m³, with a weight allowance on every bin. Call it in and it is usually on site the same day.
The job
A site without a bin is a site that has stopped
You searched for a builders waste skip bin because the job is throwing off rubble faster than a ute can carry it away. What you need is a bin that takes the mixed build load, turns up on the day you asked for, gets swapped the moment it is full, and runs on an account instead of a card every time. That is the job this page is built around.

The build sequence
What comes off the site, stage by stage
The same bin, a different load every week. Here is what a build throws off at each stage, which stream it belongs in, and what that does to the quote.
Stage 01
Strip-out and demolition

- ConcreteRecycled
- TimberRecycled
- RoofingBuilders waste
- PlasterboardRecycled
- MetalRecycled
Split the concrete and metal out and they are recycled. The rest is builders waste.

- Clean fillRecycled
- Concrete offcutsRecycled
Clean fill goes in the 2m³, 3m³ or 4m³ only, as its own load. Concrete is booked up to the 6m³.

Heavy material reaches the allowance before it fills the bin, so a rubble-heavy load belongs in a smaller size than you would expect. Going over is charged per tonne.
Step 1: Tell us the material and the size.
Details go to our platform and the quote comes back by email and SMS. Not sure on size? Say so and we will size it from the job.
Step 2: Call it in, same day.
Same-day delivery for builders is what sets us apart, and a bin is often on site within a couple of hours of the call. We run multiple trucks across Cairns daily. A driveway or the site itself is the easiest spot. A council car park needs a permit arranged before delivery, such as the parking bays in the Cairns CBD.
Step 3: Walk it in.
Some of our bins open on the short end. Push a barrow in and tip it, then shut the door and fill over the sides with the small stuff. Fill to the top rail and no higher, heavy material flat and low, so the tarp fastens and the bin can legally leave.
Step 4: Call when it is full.
Off site the moment you call, not at the end of the week. Standard hire is up to 7 days, extended for a small cost when the job runs long, or swapped for an empty one so the site never stops.

Commercial waste
Commercial waste, shop fitouts and strip-outs
A shop fitout produces the same load as a small demolition, on a tighter site with a tighter deadline. The strip-out throws off plasterboard, timber, metal framing and packaging by the pallet, and all of it goes in a builders waste bin. The plasterboard, timber and metal are recycled when they come out separate.
Access is the part that stops a fitout, not the bin. A driveway or a spot on the property is easiest. A council car park needs the permit sorted before the truck is booked, and a footpath spot still has to leave room for people to walk past. Tell us where the shop is when you book and we will work out where the bin goes before the truck leaves the yard.
The same goes for an office strip-out or a warehouse clear-out. If it is on the list of what we take, it goes in the bin. Anything classed as dangerous or hazardous does not.
Run it on account
Fitout crews and commercial builders using bins regularly can run an account with statements instead of a transaction every time, with flexible hire times for account holders.
Our own yard
Split the load and it is sorted at our own yard
Big Boyz Binz and Tropical Skips run their own sorting and recycling facility rather than tipping at somebody else's transfer station. Concrete and masonry are crushed to road base and drainage gravel, metal goes to a scrap plant, timber is recycled rather than tipped, and plasterboard is segregated and recycled into new product. On a builders load that is most of the weight. Keep it out of the general bin and it shows up in your quote. Mixed loads cost more for a reason.
The fleet behind this page is Tropical Skips', grown from two trucks and 115 bins in 2019 to 800 bins and 10 trucks and more than 30,000 Cairns jobs. Same yard, same drivers, whether the bin is going to a slab pour or a driveway.

Before you book
- Weight
- Every bin carries an allowance set by its size and the waste type booked. Building waste runs from 500 kg in the 2m³ to 1.5 tonne in the 6m³. Going over is charged per tonne, so a rubble-heavy load is usually cheaper booked in the right size than run over the allowance in a bigger one.
- Access
- A driveway or lawn is the best place. A council car park needs a permit arranged before delivery. Call us first and we will work out where it goes.
- Turnaround
- Same-day for builders, often within a couple of hours of the call. Collections can slip to the next day when the run is full, so give us 24 hours on a pick-up where you can.
- Hire period
- Up to 7 days as standard, extended for a small additional cost. Finished early? Call and we will collect it.
- Cost
- No price is quoted blind. Cost depends mostly on the size and what goes in it. Waste levies introduced in 2019 raised the price of dumping material, and a mixed load costs more to process than a separated one. Tell us the material and the size and we will quote it on the spot.
The five real questions
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Bricks, concrete and rubble are part of a builders load. Concrete kept on its own is crushed to road base and drainage gravel at our facility, and a concrete-only bin is booked up to the 6m³. If the job has a lot of it, tell us and we will work out whether one bin or two saves you money.
Building waste is taken in every size from 2m³ to 6m³, with an allowance from 500 kg to 1.5 tonne. Heavy material reaches the allowance before it fills the bin, so rubble belongs in a smaller size than you would expect. The full allowance table is on the skip bin sizes page.
Yes. Plasterboard, timber, metal and packaging from a strip-out or a new fit all go in a builders waste bin. If the bin has to go in a council car park, give us the address when you book so the permit is sorted before delivery.
No. Asbestos, tyres and batteries, paints and thinners, oil and liquid waste, gas cylinders and food waste cannot go in any skip bin. Call us and we will point you at the right disposal route.
Yes. We offer accounts and statements to builders, tradespeople and renovators using bins regularly. Get in touch and we will set one up.
