Mixed waste
Mixed waste skip bins in Cairns
One bin for the load that cannot be split. Rubbish, packaging, furniture, appliances and the end-of-job mix, in every size from 2m³ to 6m³.
The job
Some loads cannot be split, and we take them whole
You searched for a mixed waste skip bin because a clear-out, a renovation or the end of a job has left a pile that is a bit of everything: rubbish, packaging, old furniture, an appliance or two, offcuts, the lot. Sorting it is not going to happen. What you need is one bin that takes all of it, a size that will not run over the weight, a straight answer on what cannot go in, and a truck that turns up when the pile is ready. That is the page.

The fill
One bin, packed so it can leave
Pick the size, then load it in the order that gets it off site: heavy and flat first, the big items next, the small stuff over the top, and level to the rail so the tarp fastens.
The size
Heavy material goes in flat and low. It reaches the weight allowance before it fills the bin, so a dense pile belongs in a smaller size than you would expect.
The allowance
4m³
- General waste
- 800 kg
- Household waste
- 600 kg
Whatever the size, the rule is the same: level to the rail, tarp on, off site. If you are between two sizes, tell us what the pile is and we will size it from the job.
Nothing to sort
You do not have to sort it, but what comes out is worth pulling.
A mixed load is booked and taken as it is. Anything that comes out of it on its own, metal, concrete, green waste, clean fill, timber or plasterboard, is recycled at our own yard rather than tipped, and a separated load costs less to process than a mixed one.

Two mixed grades on the rate card, each with its own allowance. Household waste is the everyday load from a residential property: general rubbish, packaging, furniture, appliances. Tell us where the load is coming from and the bin is booked as the right grade.
Step 1: Tell us it is mixed, and the size you think.
The details go to our platform and the quote comes back by email and SMS. Not sure on size? Describe the pile and we will size it from the job.
Step 2: Book the delivery.
For builders it is same-day, and the bin is often on site within a couple of hours. For everyone else, 24 hours' notice where you can. There are multiple trucks on the road across Cairns every day. The driveway, the lawn or the site itself all work; a council car park, such as the parking bays in the Cairns CBD, needs a permit arranged before the truck is booked.
Step 3: Pack it in order.
Heavy and flat down low, the big items next, the small stuff over the top, level to the rail. Nothing from the banned list goes in.
Step 4: Call when it is full.
We collect it, or swap in an empty one if the pile is still growing. Standard hire runs up to 7 days, with a small cost to extend if the job does.

Pull out what you can, tip in the rest
A garage clear-out has a bike frame and a fridge in it, a renovation has the old tiles and the timber framing, a fitout strip-out has metal studs and plasterboard by the sheet. Each of those is recycled when it comes out on its own, and each one out of the mixed bin makes the mixed bin lighter, which matters when the allowance is measured in hundreds of kilograms.
Ring before the truck is booked and we will tell you whether a second bin for the metal, the green waste or the concrete is worth it on your job. If it is not, one mixed bin is fine, and it is booked as exactly that.

Our own yard
Sorted at our own yard, tipped only when it has to be
Every bin comes back to the sorting and recycling facility we run with Tropical Skips, our own yard rather than somebody else's transfer station. Metals, concrete and green waste are fully recycled when they arrive separate. What arrives mixed is the general stream, and the general stream is the part that gets tipped. That is why a load kept separate is cheaper to process, and why it shows up in your quote.
The trucks behind this page are Tropical Skips': the operation began in 2019 with two trucks and 115 bins and now runs 800 bins and 10 trucks over more than 30,000 Cairns jobs. Same yard, same drivers, whether the bin is going to a fitout strip-out or a garage clear-out.

Named, not hinted at
Before you book
- Weight
- Every size carries two mixed allowances, one for general waste and one for household waste, from 300 kg in the 2m³ to 1.2 tonne in the 6m³. Going over is charged per tonne. Heavy material flat and low, level to the rail and no higher, so the bin can legally leave.
- Size
- Mixed waste is taken in every size from 2m³ to 6m³. The 2m³ is our smallest and cheapest bin, good where space is tight. The 6m³ is the largest, built for work site and industrial clean-ups, large house clean-ups and cyclone preparation. Between two? Describe the pile and we will size it from the job.
- Access
- A driveway or lawn is the easiest spot. A footpath or nature strip works where space is limited, as long as it leaves pedestrian access. A council car park needs a permit arranged before delivery. Call us first and we will work out where it goes.
- Turnaround
- Same-day for builders, often within a couple of hours of the call. Everyone else, 24 hours where you can. Collections can slip to the next day when the run is full.
- Hire period
- Up to 7 days as standard, extended for a small additional cost. Pile gone early? Call and we will collect it.
- Cost
- No price is quoted blind. Cost depends mostly on the size and what goes in it. A mixed load costs more to process than a separated one, and the waste levies introduced in 2019 raised the price of dumping material, so anything you pull out of the bin before it goes in comes off the job. Tell us the material and the size and we will quote it on the spot.
The five real questions
Frequently asked questions
A load with more than one thing in it: general rubbish, packaging, furniture, appliances, offcuts, whatever a clear-out, a renovation or a finished job leaves in one pile. If everything in it is on the list of what we take, it goes in one bin. The banned list stays out, whatever the bin is booked as.
No. A mixed load is booked and taken as it is. Anything you do pull out, metal, concrete, green waste, clean fill, timber or plasterboard, is recycled rather than tipped, and a separated load costs less to process, so it is worth doing where it is easy.
Any of the four, 2m³ to 6m³. The 2m³ suits a small clean-up or a small amount of household items, the 3m³ a clean-up around the house and garden, the 4m³ a kitchen renovation or a work site clean-up, and the 6m³ a large house clean-up or a work site and industrial clean-up. If the pile is dense, tiles or rubble, it reaches the weight allowance before it fills the bin, so go a size smaller than you would expect.
They are two grades on the rate card, each with its own weight allowance by size. Household waste is the everyday load from a residential property: general rubbish, packaging, furniture, appliances. Tell us where the load is coming from and the bin is booked as the right grade.
Anything classed as dangerous or hazardous: asbestos, tyres and batteries, paints and thinners, oil and liquid waste, gas cylinders, and food waste or perishable scraps. If you have any of these on the job, call us and we will point you at the right disposal route.
