Green waste
Green waste skip bins in Cairns
Fronds, prunings, hedge and lawn cuttings, storm debris and the vegetation off a cleared block, in every size from 2m³ to 6m³. Keep it to vegetation and it is booked as green waste and shredded to mulch.
The job
The pile is vegetation, and it is not getting smaller
You searched for a green waste skip bin because a hedge and palm cycle, a garden strip-out before a new install, a block clear ahead of the slab or a storm clean-up has left a pile of fronds, branches, clippings and roots that a ute and trailer cannot keep up with. It is bulky rather than heavy, it has to leave before the next stage can start, and there is usually something in it that is not vegetation. What you need is a bin that takes the lot, a size that will not be full by lunchtime, a clear line on what has to stay out of it, and a truck that comes back when it is full. That is the page.

Green waste is light and bulky, so it fills the space before it reaches the weight. If you are between two sizes, go larger. Level to the rail and stowed so the tarp can be fastened, and the bin can leave.
Step 1: Tell us it is green waste, and the size you think.
The details go to our platform and the quote comes back by email and SMS. Between two sizes? Go larger: green waste fills the space before the weight.
Step 2: Book the delivery.
For builders it is same-day, and the bin is often on site within a couple of hours. For everyone else, 24 hours' notice where you can. There are multiple trucks on the road across Cairns every day. The driveway, the lawn or the site itself all work; a council car park, such as the parking bays in the Cairns CBD, needs a permit arranged before the truck is booked.
Step 3: Keep it to vegetation.
Fronds, branches, clippings, prunings and roots go in. Soil, timber, concrete, pots and rubbish stay out and go in their own bin. Fill to the top rail and no higher, stowed so the tarp can be fastened.
Step 4: Call when it is full.
We collect it, or swap in an empty one if the job is still producing. Standard hire runs up to 7 days, with a small cost to extend if the cycle does.

Soil, timber, rubbish: what comes out before it goes in
A hedge cycle has plastic pots and the odd bag of rubbish in it, a strip-out has soil under the turf and treated sleepers along the edge, a block clear has old concrete and fence palings, a storm clean-up has roofing and fence panels. None of it is vegetation, and a green waste bin that contains other waste attracts additional charges. Each one out of the bin keeps the bin green, and each one has a bin of its own.
Call before the truck is booked. We will look at what is coming off the job and tell you whether the soil, the timber or the rubbish earns its own bin. If none of it does, one mixed bin takes the lot, booked as exactly that.

Our own yard
Shredded at our own yard, not tipped
Your bin comes back to the sorting and recycling facility we run with Tropical Skips, our own yard rather than somebody else's transfer station. Green waste that arrives as vegetation is shredded to mulch and compost. A bin with other waste in it is pulled apart like any mixed load, and what cannot be pulled out goes to the general stream and is tipped. Keep it to vegetation and it is shredded as one load. Mixed with anything else, it is pulled apart at the yard first, and a green waste bin that contains other waste attracts additional charges.
The trucks behind this page are Tropical Skips': the operation began in 2019 with two trucks and 115 bins and now runs 800 bins and 10 trucks over more than 30,000 Cairns jobs. Same yard, same drivers, whether the bin is going to a strata block or a cleared lot.

Before you book
- Weight
- Every size carries a green waste allowance, from 400 kg in the 2m³ to 1.2 tonne in the 6m³. Going over is charged per tonne. Green waste bins that contain other waste attract additional charges. Green waste is light and bulky, so it fills the space before it reaches the weight.
- Size
- Green waste is taken in every size from 2m³ to 6m³. The 3m³ suits a clean-up around the house and garden, the 4m³ a work site clean-up, and the 6m³ is the largest, built for work site and industrial clean-ups and cyclone preparation. Between two? Go larger.
- Access
- A driveway or lawn is the easiest spot. A footpath or nature strip works where space is limited, as long as it leaves pedestrian access. A council car park needs a permit arranged before delivery. Call us first and we will work out where it goes.
- Turnaround
- Same-day for builders, often within a couple of hours of the call. Everyone else, 24 hours where you can. Collections can slip to the next day when the run is full.
- Hire period
- Up to 7 days as standard, extended for a small additional cost. Job done early, or the bin full by the second day of a cycle? Call and we will collect it, or swap in an empty one.
- Cost
- No price is quoted blind. Cost depends mostly on the size and what goes in it. A green waste bin that contains other waste attracts additional charges, and a mixed load costs more to process than a separated one, so what stays out of the bin comes off the job. Tell us the job and the size and we will quote it on the spot.
The five real questions
Frequently asked questions
Vegetation: lawn clippings, hedge trimmings, palm fronds and leaves, branches and prunings, weeds, shrubs, turf and roots, and storm and cyclone debris. Not building timber, treated or painted timber, soil or clean fill, concrete and masonry, plastic pots and bags, or general rubbish. Each of those has a bin of its own.
Not in a green waste bin. Turf, roots and prunings are green waste, shredded to mulch and compost, and soil is a soil bin in the 2m³, 3m³ or 4m³. Soil with roots through it is no longer clean fill, so knock it off before it goes in. If the job has both, say so when you book: the soil goes in a soil bin so it can still be reused as fill, not shredded with the green load.
Any of the four, 2m³ to 6m³. Green waste is light and bulky, so it fills the space before it reaches the weight: if you are between two sizes, go larger. The 3m³ suits a clean-up around the house and garden, the 4m³ a work site clean-up, the 6m³ a work site or industrial clean-up and cyclone preparation.
It comes back to the sorting and recycling facility we run with Tropical Skips at Holloways Beach and is shredded to mulch and compost. A bin with other waste in it is pulled apart like any mixed load, and what cannot be pulled out goes to the general stream and is tipped.
The bin attracts additional charges, and it is pulled apart at the yard rather than shredded as one load. A bag of rubbish, a stack of palings, the soil off a root ball: each is worth pulling out before the truck comes. Say what is coming off the job when you book and we will tell you which bin each thing belongs in.
